About me

I am an author and journalist and conservationist with a lifelong interest in large mammals.

I began my studies at the University of Oxford under Dr Malcolm Coe, who was then dividing his time between the Department of Zoology there and the Tsavo National Park in Kenya working on elephant ecology. By the time I finished I was studying philosophy of biology under Professor David Papineau at King’s College, University of London. I hold both Master of Arts and Master of Science degrees.

I’ve written for many publication but most recently, and regularly, for The Times, Daily Telegraph, The Independent, Financial Times, The Times Literary Supplement, The Spectator, Prospect and Condé Nast’s GQ magazines. I’ve appeared on the BBC, CNN, Al-Jazeera and the Discovery Channel. My last book, Into The Arena, was shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year.
